BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Former U.S. Senator and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum announced today that his Patriot Voices PAC has endorsed Gary Palmer for Congress in Alabama’s 6th Congressional District.

“I am pleased to announce our endorsement of Gary Palmer for Congress,” Santorum said in a press release. “Gary has been at the forefront of the battle for our conservatives ideals not just in Alabama but across the country. His leadership at the Alabama Policy Institute has provided solutions for some of our country’s biggest challenges from economic and tax issues, to reducing the size of government and to keeping our families strong.”

Santorum won Alabama’s Republican Presidential Primary in 2012 with 35 percent of the vote, and he remains a popular figure among the state’s large bloc of evangelicals. He’s also widely believed to be eyeing another presidential bid in 2016. He said today that he looks forward to working alongside Palmer in Washington, whether it’s from the White House, or in his current role as a conservative opinion leader.

“Gary has spent much of his career fighting to preserve our Constitutional rights, and I know he will take that commitment to our nation’s capital,” said Santorum. “He is devoted to ensuring the American dream is alive and well for future generations. I look forward to fighting alongside him in the weeks and months to come.”

Palmer said in a release that he and Santorum share a belief that the ever-expanding role of the Federal government and the nation’s growing debt are two of the most pressing issues facing the United States.

“I have known Rick for years and I am thankful for his support,” said Palmer. “We both strongly believe that our enormous debt is the price we are paying for expanding the role of government beyond what the Constitution prescribes.”

Palmer is facing State Rep. Paul DeMarco in the 6th Congressional District runoff on July 15th.

The two candidates are set to square off in their first head-to-head debate this Thursday, June 19th, at Regions Field in downtown Birmingham.
