BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The U.S. Women’s National Team that stunned the world Sunday in its record-smashing 5-2 victory over Japan in the World Cup final could be bringing its mojo to the Magic City this fall.
Bruno Event Team President and CEO Gene Hallman floated the possibility of the team’s nationwide victory tour making a stop in Alabama on his Facebook page after their World Cup win Sunday evening, and is already seeing a very enthusiastic response.
Hallman told Yellowhammer Monday morning his team is working on an agreement with U.S. Soccer to bring the team to play an international “friendly” match against another team which played in the World Cup tournament this summer.
“I suspect by the end of this week we’ll have U.S. Soccer’s decision,” said Hallman, who hinted the city’s chances of securing the match are high. “Birmingham has always done a great job supporting international soccer events.”
The teams would meet in the city’s historic Legion Field, where multiple international soccer matches were held during the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. The women’s national team has also played numerous friendlies in Birmingham in the past, but this appearance would likely bring thousands of soccer fans still buzzing over the teams World Cup win to the city.
The team has already announced matches in Pittsburgh on August 16th and in Chattanooga on August 19th, with an additional four stops expected to be announced this week. Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field has already sold out its 26,000 seat stadium for the match, and Chattanooga sold its own 20,000 seat stadium out quickly after its announcement, as well.
