Dr. David Platt, who until recently pastored Birmingham’s Church at Brook Hills, is poised with the upcoming release of a new book to be an influential voice in the cultural debate surrounding some of American society’s major hot-button issues — from gay marriage and abortion to immigration and racism.

Platt, 35, is the author of several books, including Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream, which has sold over a million copies. His 2013 release, Follow Me: A call to die. A call to live., also debuted on the New York Times bestseller list.

Next week, Platt will release his latest book, Counter Culture: A Compassionate Call to Counter Culture in a World of Poverty, Same-Sex Marriage, Racism, Sex Slavery, Immigration, Abortion, Persecution, Orphans, and Pornography, at a time of rapid social change in the United States, particularly in Alabama where a federal judge recently struck down the state’s constitutional ban on gay marriage.

Here’s how Platt’s publisher describes the book:

Everywhere we turn, battle lines are being drawn—traditional marriage vs. gay marriage, pro-life vs. pro-choice, personal freedom vs. governmental protection. Seemingly overnight, culture has shifted to the point where right and wrong are no longer measured by universal truth but by popular opinion.

And as difficult conversations about homosexuality, abortion, and religious liberty continue to inject themselves into our workplaces, our churches, our schools, and our homes, Christians everywhere are asking the same question: How are we supposed to respond to all this? In Counter Culture, David Platt shows Christians how to actively take a stand on such and challenges us to become passionate, unwavering voices for Christ.

Every Platt release is eagerly anticipated by a large audience, but his new post as president of the International Mission Board (IMB) has further elevated his profile, potentially setting up Counter Culture to have an even greater reach.

The IMB is the missionary-sending organization affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. It was initially established in 1845 as the Board of Foreign Missions, and now operates in nearly every country around the globe. It supports just under 5,000 missionaries in the field and has a yearly operating budget of $300 million, making it one of the largest missions organizations in the world.

Counter Culture is set to be released on Wednesday, Feb. 4 and will be available wherever books are sold. The first chapter can be downloaded now for free on the book’s website, and a promotional video can be viewed below.
