Sessions: Gang of Eight does not fully understand immigration bill

Senator Jeff Sessions pointed out today that no one has a clue how to answer even the most basic questions about the comprehensive immigration reform bill currently being debated, including members of the Gang of Eight who crafted it.

During the markup of the immigration bill in today’s Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Sessions cited an article in today’s Christian Science Monitor that stated the following:

“These may seem like straightforward questions: How many new permanent residents of the United States will there be every year, if the Senate’s bipartisan legislation on immigration reform becomes law? And how many new workers would the plan inject into the American economy, exactly?

“The problem, at least for the moment, is that even those involved in crafting the immigration reform legislation don’t know the answers.”

Sessions said that the 850 page bill is extremely complex and that it’s dangerous to rush it.

“Our staff has been working for days trying to decipher this gobbledygook. And I’m told that you read it two or three times and you get a different insight each time you read it,” said Sessions. “It was written by clever, careful lawyers who had intent on each one of these amendments. And I don’t believe the Gang of Eight fully understands it. Maybe they know how many people are going to be admitted under this bill. If so, I’d like to be told at least that before we’re asked to vote on it.”

“We have no idea how many people would be legalized under the bill,” Sessions concluded.
