Liberal media criticizes Alabama PSC for opening meeting in prayer

Right Wing Watch, a media outlet “dedicated to monitoring and exposing the activities of the right-wing movement,” Queerty, an LGBT site, and a section of The Huffington Post called “Gay Voices,” are three of the media outlets who today criticized the Alabama Public Service Commission for opening their most recent public meeting in prayer.

“Is a public meeting over utility company rates really the right place for a prayer asking God’s forgiveness for abortion and same-sex marriage? We doubt it,” wrote The Huffington Post. “[Minister] John Jordan of East Memorial Baptist Church in Prattville, Ala., who is also a member of the Alabama Tea Party, began his prayer by polling those present to see who believed in God. Then he went on to pray for a number of things, including forgiveness from God for the ‘sins’ of abortion and gay marriage,” the Post continued.

Yellowhammer initially reported the outrage over Jordan’s prayer after a representative from an environmental group called the prayer “batsh** crazy.”

“I hope to have a the clip of that dumb prayer rant ASAP,” the enviro group representative, Michael Hansen, said on his Twitter.

The video of the prayer has since surfaced and was uploaded to YouTube where it currently has just over 4,000 views.

“My Christian faith guides me in everything that I do, and I’m proud that the Alabama Public Service Commission opens each meeting seeking His divine guidance and thanking God for the blessings He has given us,” PSC President Twinkle Cavanaugh told The Huffington Post. “I make no apologies as a Christian elected into public service by the people of Alabama. Without a doubt, our nation needs more prayer, not less.”
