Alabama congressmen on Armed Services Committee approve of Syria strike

All three members of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee from Alabama have expressed approval of an airstrike against a number of Iranian-backed targets in Syria ordered by President Joe Biden’s administration on Thursday.

The operation, Biden’s first authorization of deadly force, was in response to “recent attacks against American and Coalition personnel in Iraq,” per a DoD statement sent to Politico.

“Last night, the U.S. showed that attacks on American personnel and interests will not be tolerated. I support President Biden’s response to provocation from Iranian-backed militias,” said U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks) in a statement.

“We must defend our interests abroad, and I hope the Biden Administration continues to apply pressure to deter future aggression from Iran and its proxies,” Rogers added.

Rogers is currently the top-ranking Republican on the high-profile House Armed Services Committee (HASC).

The operation carried out against the militia forces in Syria included the dropping of seven 500lb precision bombs. “All bombs hit their targets, a crossing used by the militia groups to move weapons and other goods across the border,” according to Politico.

“A deadly response is appropriate whenever American forces are attacked by our enemies. Biden’s strike appears to have done that.  In the absence of an adequate response, our geopolitical foes will infer they can attack American military personnel with impunity,” U.S. Rep Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville) told Yellowhammer News on Friday.

He continued, “America’s enemies must never be allowed to mistakenly believe they can attack us and get away with it. Having said that, it would be much better if America ceased being the police cop on every corner of the planet.  Too many Americans are dying or suffering disabling wounds, and too much treasury is being spent, in countries that do not adequately appreciate the sacrifice America makes on their behalf.”

Brooks is the second-longest tenured Alabama congressman serving on the HASC, after Rogers.

In response to an inquiry from Yellowhammer the HASC’s newest member from Alabama, freshman U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile), expressed support for the strike similar to that of his colleagues

“The action taken yesterday against Iranian-backed militants was an appropriate response to recent attacks on Americans in Iraq. It is incredibly important for the current administration to work with Congress to maintain pressure on Iran and deter future aggression against American interests,” stated Carl.
